Being a dude, and very close to gamers and the games industry can be really damaging at times. It would be multiple times worse if I was a woman.
It’s a very male dominated industry, which itself is sad as it leads to less diverse games, but it also allows for a culture where people do not get called on their prejudices. The scariest part for me personally is that I’ve been in this kind of environment for a long time. All boys school, engineering at university, games industry. These are not the places you find people with well balanced opinions on women. I really feel that if it wasn’t for good quality friends (outside these circles), decent roll models and being called on bad (proto) opinions I could have ended up like these entitled idiots on the internet.
These days I feel seriously obligated to call people on their shit and try and make the industry a better place for women and for everyone. I hope that I can have some positive influence, and I hope I can help with younger gamers turning out like these people.
Engineers and video game nerds are pretty much the worst people.
